Context - IconSWM
The percentage of India's population living in cities and urban areas from 14%, at the time of Independence, has almost doubled to 27.8%. Urbanisation has shown faster rates of growth. India had crossed the billion mark at the turn of the century, and is expected to accelerate even further and by 2021 India's population is expected to increase to 1.35 billion and 40% of Indians will be living in urban areas. According to the United Nation’s estimate, about 90 % of future growth will take place in cities. By now more than 50% of the world's population is urban. In 2030, when the global population will have risen from currently 6.5 to 8.2 billion people, about 60 % of all humans will live in cities.
The per capita of MSW generated daily, in India ranges from about 100 g in small towns to 500 g in large towns with an estimated increase @1%-1.33% annually. About 42 MMT of solid waste (1.15 lakh MT per day) are generated every year by the urban population in India. The average collection efficiency for MSW in Indian cities is nearly 72.5% and around 70% of the cities lack adequate waste transport capacity. Open dumping of garbage facilitates the breeding for disease vectors such as flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats, and other pests.
Huge opportunities exist in eastern and north-east India to work for effective solid waste management, improvement in municipal services, urban development and public works. In India, the increase in SW generation would impose the cumulative requirement of land (base year 1997), for disposal of MSW, would amount to around 1400 Square kilometer by 2047. The estimated release of methane into the atmosphere is about 39 MMT in 2047, which is presently 10 MMT. The estimated potential for power generation is 2550 MW in 2012 from 148 KMTPD of MSW and 5200 MW in 2017 from 304 KMTPD of MSW.
Many initiatives are being taken up by the Central & State Governments and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in India, specifically in eastern and north-eastern part for addressing the urban challenges, including the historic Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission (JNNURM) of the Government of India, which aims at creating economically productive, efficient, equitable, inclusive, sustainable and responsive cities. In India there are number of fund and Projects available under Italian Loan Assistance Programme, JBIC, DFID, JNNURM, 12th Financial Commission grant and many others.
